The History of West New Brighton
The neighborhood was formerly referred to as “Factoryville,” but Islanders today frequently call it “West Brighton.” The names “Livingston” and “Randall Manor” are used to describe some of the areas of the neighborhood that are closer to the water. In the 1600s, the Dutch were the first people to settle in this part of Staten Island and were soon followed by the English. West Brighton people openly supported the Crown throughout the American Revolution. Then, when waves after waves of immigrants arrived in the US, the region started to be populated by Irish people. Currently, the majority of the residents in the area are Irish, followed by Germans, Italians, African Americans, and Hispanics.
At the location that is now known as Walker Park, the oldest continuously running cricket club in the US was founded in West Brighton in 1872. The nation’s first lawn tennis court was constructed here in 1873. Still playing, there are matches for the Staten Island Cricket Club.
Two enormous public housing developments were constructed in the decades that followed World War II, completely changing the area. Families of shipyard and defense workers were originally housed in the first, the Markham Homes. Following were the West Brighton Houses. In order to renovate the property, occupants of The Markham Homes were kicked out starting in 2004. All renters had moved out as of 2007 already. Few residents have been allowed to move back into the renovated region, despite predictions that many would be able to.
Today, West Brighton is a vibrant, ethnically diverse community with something for everyone. With a strong sense of history and community, West Brighton is a great place to call home.
