History
In 1626, Peter Minuit was said to have paid 60 guilders for the island from the local Indians (some historians characterize them as belonging to the Lenape, Delaware, Munsee, or Algonquin people), most likely with trade goods worth around 1.5 pounds (0.7 kg) of silver. In 1664, the English seized control of the island, which had already been incorporated as New Amsterdam in 1653.
When taken over by the British, it was renamed New York City and played an important role in the country’s early history, both militarily and politically. During the District’s early history, it was located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. In 1785, Congress met there (1785-90), and George Washington was inaugurated as president in 1800. Manhattan developed as the center of a successful and developing metropolis during the 19th century, particularly following the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825.
Today, Manhattan is a global center of business and finance, and its diverse population contributes to its vibrant culture. It is home to some of the world’s most famous museums and cultural institutions, as well as countless parks and green spaces. Manhattan continues to evolve and surprise, with new attractions and experiences always popping up.
