The History of Clifton, Staten Island
The neighborhood was first given the name “Clifton” in 1817 when a town by that name was founded along the shoreline and covered a wider area than the current neighborhood. Early on, the Vanderbilt family owned a large portion of the area’s territory. At the beginning of what is now Vanderbilt Avenue, Cornelius Vanderbilt started a ferry service from the shore to Manhattan. Formerly the United States Public Health Service Hospital, Bayley Seton Hospital, north of Vanderbilt Avenue, served as the first location of the National Institutes of Health (now located in Bethesda, Maryland).
Staten Island remained largely rural in the 1880s. For instance, “a low range of grass hills” with 438 goats have pastured nearby the “settlement of Clifton” by a Frenchman named Paul Chaulmier, who sold goat’s milk to affluent New Yorkers. In the late 1800s, Clifton began to experience waves of new immigration. Italians began to move into the area, followed by Irish and Greeks in the early 20th century. These new residents helped to transform Clifton into a thriving community with a vibrant culture and economy.
